UNCAFI
Improve the viability of insect farms by optimising supply costs
Context
The growth of world aquaculture and the need for the preservation of natural marine resources require changing the composition of feed for farmed fish towards more sustainable formulas (plants, insects…).
Objective
Improving the viability of insect farms by optimizing supply costs.
About the <strong>project </strong>
The supply of substrate to feed large-scale insect farms represents more than 50% of production costs. The UNCAFI project aims to optimize these supply costs in order to improve the viability of these farms. To do this, the project is refining the zootechnical model of the insect considered the most promising: the black soldier fly. In the first part of the project, a test program involving at least 15 substrates is carried out. In the second part of the project, the partners are working on a substrate that combines economic benefits with the nutritional needs of the insects. The third part of the project concerns the securing of intellectual property. The substrates are developed on the basis of co-products.
