ABC FISH

Fish protists and parasitic nematodes: from their circulation in ecosystems to their impact on human health

Context

Fish, like all animal species, are often subject to parasites. Among these parasites are roundworms of the Anisakidae or Protista family. Parasites can cause a gastrointestinal-like condition in humans called anisakiasis. The presence of parasites in fish is very complex and difficult to control.

Objective

Studying the presence of parasites in the fishery products of Boulogne-sur-Mer and to evaluate the impact of these parasites on the health of the professionals of the fishing industry as well as of the overall population.

About the project

Initially, the project partners are focusing on the detection and identification of parasites by microscopy and/or molecular biology in herring, whiting, mackerel, squid and marine mammals. In a second step, they are carrying out a study to compare the frequency of parasite/fish allergies among professionals and the general population.
