SEXTIL
Development of two tilapia early sexing tests for production and research laboratories
Context
In tilapia, the use of single-sex populations is essential for the profitability of the industry. In fact, males have better growth and reach on average 1.6 times the weight of a female. Mono-sex populations are generally produced by hormone inversion, whereas in a context where the environment and the quality of the products advocate, it is important to find sustainable, hormone-free alternatives.
Objective
Developing two tilapia early sexing tests for production and research laboratories.
About the <strong>project </strong>
The SEXTIL project aims at developing a sexing kit suited to different structures: for laboratories, as well as medium and large production companies. In the framework of the project, the kit is validated on most domestic tilapia strains (Bouaké, Manzala, GIFT ..) and on other farmed tilapia species (blue tilapia, Mozambique tilapia, red tilapia strains). A market study is also being carried out to analyze the potential of these sexing kits (in Africa, Asia and Latin America) and to enable a French company (start-up) to market these kits at a global scale.
