CARREJET
Supporting fishing professionals to adapt to the new European regulations on by-catches and discards
Context
The European Union’s Common Fisheries Policy has evolved significantly and very quickly with regard to by-catches and discards (substantial restrictions on the possibility of discarding unwanted catches at sea, and a total ban on certain species). French fishing professionals have had to adapt quickly to this new regulatory framework.
Objective
Accompanying the fishing industry in adapting to the new European regulations on by-catches and discards.
About the project
The aim is to support fishermen by contributing to the development of strategies for adapting to this new regulatory context. These strategies can be based on two complementary approaches: modifying fishing strategies and methods / landing and processing catches on land. The project aims at:
● characterizing the main discards;
● identifying the main causes of these discards;
● proposing integrated strategies by profession, port and species.
