What is your business?
ZENI offers an innovative and circular solution for treating concentrated effluents containing nitrogen and phosphorus (and COD) using microalgae.
The quality of the treated water meets standards and, at a minimum, allows it to be discharged into the natural environment, even though we are pushing for its REUSE in cleaning activities to reduce water consumption.
The microalgae produced are revalorized in agriculture for their agronomic value (biostimulants), generating revenue and enabling a quick ROI (3 to 5 years).
Who are your products/services for?
Our process is aimed at RAS fish farms and focuses on concentrates/effluents very rich in N & P (e.g., drum filter washing); but also at processing plants and agri-food industries specializing in seafood products (especially fish cutting and processing).
Why are innovation and research important in your sector?
Our approach is resolutely focused on innovation, and our connections with research centers and excellent startups allow us to work, for example, on selecting highly efficient strains for water treatment. By joining AQUIMER, we aim to offer the entire aquaculture and fishing sector a concrete way to modernize and limit their impacts while becoming more competitive (particularly by enabling them to develop more sustainably and serenely in the face of increasingly strict effluent management regulations).

The sector is characterized by great diversity, supported by a fleet of over 6,000 vessels spread across mainland France and the outermost regions.
This activity feeds an entire ecosystem composed of 34 fish auctions, as well as hundreds of wholesaling and processing companies.
However, the industry faces a major commercial challenge:
despite solid national production, France reported a trade deficit of €4.9 billion in 2024, highlighting a heavy reliance on imports to meet domestic demand.
The study conducted by the AFPC reveals striking figures: companies linked to clusters create 1.3 times more jobs and raise 2.4 times more funds than the average French SME.
The results are clear: companies linked to clusters show better performance than the national average. They create more jobs, attract more talent, and benefit from more dynamic growth. They also stand out for their ability to raise funds, with significantly higher amounts, proving their attractiveness to investors.
More resilient, these companies also present a lower risk of failure and better overall health. Their regional roots are also a strong asset: widely established in the regions, they actively participate in the spread of innovation throughout the French territory.
Another key advantage: their integration into structured networks allows them to strengthen their links with major contractors, thus facilitating their access to markets and their integration into value chains.
These performances are explained in particular by the strength of the clusters’ collaborative model, which promotes synergies between players, accelerates R&D projects, and strengthens the credibility of companies with partners and investors.
In a context marked by the challenges of sovereignty, industrial and ecological transition, competitiveness clusters appear more than ever as strategic levers to stimulate innovation, support competitiveness, and accompany the economic development of territories.

To better understand what truly happens at sea to better manage resources: this is the core objective of the ObsMer program. By creating a direct link between field observations, scientific expertise, and management decisions, this initiative helps reconcile fishing activities with the sustainable preservation of fishery resources.
Thanks to the data collected aboard vessels, ObsMer provides concrete insights into practices, catches, and discards, thereby enriching knowledge and supporting the evolution of the sector.
To learn more about the key results and lessons learned, consult the full document below.
To make this initiative accessible and engaging, the project created an original resource in the form of a comic strip and a board game—fun and modern formats that help raise awareness about aquaculture among both young people and industry professionals.
An inventive and educational way to convey key messages about innovation, sustainability, and the circular economy in the aquaculture sector.

On January 9, nearly forty participants gathered for a morning dedicated to a major challenge for industrial companies: optimizing refrigeration consumption. This inherently costly expense depends on both climatic conditions and electricity prices, and directly impacts competitiveness, particularly in the aquatic products sector, where refrigeration is crucial for product quality, safety, and preservation.
Despite the importance of this challenge, refrigeration systems are often poorly controlled over time: consumption measurements are limited, initial settings are rarely adjusted after commissioning, and performance drifts go unnoticed.
Adding to this are:
A challenging climatic context, with rising temperatures and more frequent heatwaves.
A strengthened regulatory framework, requiring a reduced environmental footprint, control of energy consumption, and stricter monitoring of refrigerants.
This meeting provided an opportunity to:
Identify levers for energy optimization and refrigeration consumption.
Share concrete feedback on facility operation.
Exchange directly with industry stakeholders to explore sustainable and effective solutions together.
